Intermediate Level Course
The Exchange Office, through the “Spanish For Foreigners Program”, offers a one-semester intermediate level course taught in 40 hours and worth 6 credits. This course is taught on a basis of two sessions per week during 13 weeks.
The content of the course is pretty general and covers elementary grammatical issues and the use of communicational skills, prioritizing the development and improvement of listening, reading comprehension and writing skills.
Advanced and Proficient Level Courses
Advanced and Proficient Level Courses are taught on a basis of two 90-minute sessions per week for a period of 13 weeks. The Spanish Diagnostic Test is a test the students need to take in order to enroll into this course.
The courses at the Advanced and Proficient levels aim at improving grammatical and textual analysis skills present at the different contexts of academic life.
Paraphrasing skills and abilities related to the reworking of complex structures are exercised on this course. Special emphasis is put on the development of abilities used in the production of oral and listening tasks due to discussion and lecturing sessions.
Specialization Level Course
The specialization level course consists of two 90-minute sessions per week for a period of 13 weeks.
The specialization level course prioritizes the development of writing strategies as well as criteria for the analysis of texts. It focuses on the use of written Spanish and the correct use of advanced and specialized lexicon. Rules for the correct usage of orthography, grammatical resources and lexicon are also studied.
These types of courses are designed by request of external institutions, both in format and content, and provide the tools required to cover the communicational needs of international students or professionals working in Chile.
The courses can be structured so as to become intensive courses covered in 30 to 40 hours during a period of two weeks or they can be conceived as complementary courses covered in 2 to 3 sessions per week during the entire academic year.
Teachers organize debates and conversation panels with Chilean students as well as other activities that could give the students the chance to interact with the local community, both outside or at the university. Cultural trips are often organized too. These courses can be scheduled any time during the year and their cost is USD 150 per hour (with a maximum of 15 students per class).
